Hand on Her Head

#VERSE
“Get your hand off my head!
Don’t touch me there!”
Annetta screamed loud
’Cause she was scared
Should have felt safe
In the Fellowship Hall
Coffee and donuts
A cross on the wall
#VERSE
Mom pulled her aside
Whispered, “That man won’t hurt us
He leads the youth choir
His name’s Mr. Curtis
And now that you’re nine
He thought it might be great
If you joined their rehearsals
Tuesdays, six-thirty to eight”
#CHORUS
Hand on her head
Hand on her shoulders
Choir practice was creepy
But she did as Mom told her
#INSTRUMENTAL
#VERSE
A stuffed rainbow elephant
Cuddled Annetta at night
Friends at choir—so cool
Mr. Curtis—not right
He still touched her hair
But he touched the boys more
Asleep snuggling Elly
Someone pounding the door
#VERSE
Her mom woke her up
Said, “Come sit on the couch”
A cop with a clipboard
Tried to pull the truth out
“Did he touch you down there?
Was he with you alone?
“No, no,” said Annetta
“But he gave Dave rides home”
#CHORUS
“Hand on Dave’s head
Hand on his shoulders
Hands other places
Yes,” that’s what Dave had told her
“Thanks for your help”
The officer said
“Tomorrow, a counselor
But for now, back to bed”
#BRIDGE
Annetta’s words were shown
On video at the Curtis trial
But other evidence was weak
He danced from the courtroom with a smile
A decade slipped by
Almost forgot about him
But then Annetta
Joined a gym
#INSTRUMENTAL
#VERSE
The coach at the gym
Was a young guy named Mack
Showed Annetta some tips
For strengthening her back
And he coached lots of girls
Junior cheerleading squad
They all seemed to like him
But something was odd
#VERSE
Then Annetta saw firsthand
Mack’s creepiest side
He touched young girls’ shoulders
And their hair all the time
Her initial reaction
Shotgun to his balls
But she bypassed that fantasy
Gave detectives a call
#VERSE
The girls were reluctant
To talk about Mack
But once one stepped forward
Four others joined fast
Evidence was solid
Witnesses, DNA
Annetta helped police
Put secret cameras in place
#CHORUS
Hand on her head
Hand on her shoulders
Hands other places
As Mack had grown bolder
Fear made each girl give in
To Mack’s sick demands
Five brave girls—same story
As each took the stand
#CHORUS
Hand on her head
Hand on her shoulder
Annetta’s still haunted
By what her mom had told her
She still has nightmares
From what happened to Dave
And big cuddly Elly
Still helps Annetta be brave
